In Our Grandmother’s Arms

In our grandmothers arms, we learned of love, grace, forgiveness and strength.

From her hands we learned to sew our hearts onto our sleeves, how to cook love into a meal and how to make flowers bloom. We walked solemnly with her to place those flowers on the cross as she taught us of God’s love for us.

In our grandmothers home we learned that love meant your favorite piece of chicken was the piece that was left after the children ate. Because their joy, tasted sweeter than any meal.

We learned how to throw the best tea parties and how to make the best grilled cheese sandwiches. How to walk a bit slower, swim a bit slower, and take time to enjoy the small things.

In our grandmothers embrace, we found safety and hope. We learned that there were no conditions on her love.

From her tears as she sat stoically through her own loss, we learned of courage and hope and faith. We learned how to keep moving, even when grief felt like an ocean within.

In our grandmothers arms, we learned how to hold each other a little closer, for a little longer.

We learned how to celebrate life. We learned that she would live on in every one of God’s creations and if we need her, all we need to do is look for her there.
